ACH 206 - Kitchen and Bath Design

4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory weekly; one term.
Gain an overview of Kitchen and Bath Design. Interpret program and code requirements for basic kitchen and bath facilities in residential settings. Address finishes, appliance options, various building shells and budget constraints. Design kitchens and baths following the guidelines of NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) with additional consideration for ADA (The Americans with Disability Act) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Lab fee $40.

Prerequisite(s): ACH 202  or ACH 204  or ACH 211  or permission of department chair.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Interpret criteria for creating solutions in kitchens and baths
    • Plan layouts for kitchens and bath problems
    • Plot solutions using CADD
    • Describe verbally decisions in design layouts
    • Incorporate standards of the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association)
  • Design kitchens and baths for residential use
    • Review current periodicals for product availability
    • Utilize ADA recommendations where necessary
    • Prepare kitchen and bath solutions that are intergrated into the overall design
    • Apply spaceplanning and residential interior design principles to kitchen and bath design
    • Apply code requirements
  • Design kitchenes and baths for commercial use following universal and ADA requirements
    • Identify local codes
    • Use resources to follow universal standards and ADA requirements
    • Access commercial trade periodicals for state of the art equipment information
    • Simulate client interviews for criteria
    • Propose design solutions
  • Draw design plans using CADD
    • Apply CADD to develope and present design solutions
    • Align solutions to mirror documents in the current business climate
    • Review specialized kitchen and bath software used in the profession
    • Review software developed by product manufacturers
  • Evaluate appliances and fixtures based on research
    • Acquaint self with various internet search engines
    • Analyze products and options in electronic and print media
    • View options physically in a showroom setting
    • Interface with contractors and repairman on fixtures that are user friendly
  • Present solutions before an audience
    • Dress in a professional manner on presentation day
    • Utilize electronic and graphic presentation methods
    • Present solutions orally
    • Assemble samples to aid in audience comprehension
  • Critique solutions proposed
    • Compare each students projects
