ACH 214 - Professional Practices in Interior Design

3 credit hours - Three hours of lecture weekly; one term.
Learn legal and professional responsibilities of operating an interior design business. Examine the various contracts, standardized and custom, that protect both designer and client during working projects. Review contractual arrangements, ethics and practices of today’s interior designer. Ideal for internships or those already in the workforce. Lab fee $40.

Note: Intended for the student who has taken interior design studio classes or has industry experience.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Establish how to set up an interior design firm
    • Apply computer knowledge to research online sole proprioritors and corporations
    • Visit different interior design firms

  • Review ethics in the interior design climate
    • Interface with interior design professinals on their experiences
    • Evaluate the written law with ethics
    • Simulate business circumstance and debate outcomes
  • Formulate marketing strategies
    • Observe successful companies
    • Define what makes a product attractive
    • Critique elements that lead to success or failure
    • Create a branded product line and its marketing strategy
  • Acquaint self with project management skills
    • Observe project management in the business climate
    • Group and analyze the hierarchy of individuals for successful project management
  • Examine legal issues in an interior design business
    • Interpret current laws affecting interior design
    • Acquaint self with documents that protect the interior designer
    • Determine possible legislation not currently available
