HIT 220 - Legal Aspects of Health Information Management 3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Learn the legal issues of Health Information Management with focus on statutory and regulatory requirements, case law and practical applications. Special legal problems associated with access to patient information, disposition of records, confidentiality and privacy, reporting requirements and compliance with current state and federal legislation are emphasized.
Prerequisite(s): HIT 111 (With a C or better).
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate ability to participate in implementation of legal and regulatory requirements of health information
- Demonstrate ability to apply policies and procedures for access and disclosure of health information
- Demonstrate ability to understand laws pertaining to release of information and patient rights
- Conduct privacy and confidentiality training programs
- Ability to investigate and recommend solutions to privacy issues
- Apply and promote ethical standards of practice
