MUS 172 - Contemporary Guitar Techniques

2 credit hours - One hour of lecture and two hours of studio weekly; one term.
Introduces guitar performance skills necessary for industrial, studio and live performance. Styles covered include jazz, country, rockabilly, fusion and rock. Emphasizes the development of individual style and the essential techniques for the modern guitarist. Electric or acoustic guitar required.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    • Identify scales and modes in music notation
    • Create finger patterns for scales and modes
    • Demonstrate the patterns for scales and modes
  • Sight-read commercial notation
    • Read chord symbols
    • Play in correct position
    • Demonstrate specific style

  • Perform various styles of riffs
    • Select correct instrument for the style
    • Demonstrate correct playing position
    • Identify type of riff
    • Connect style to riff pattern
  • Create a demo recording
    • Demonstrate computer/digital music studio protocol
    • Assemble a two-mic stereo recording set
    • Create a stereo recording of solo guitar
    • Apply mixing technique to existing tracks
