PHY 111 - Fundamentals of Physics 1

4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly; one term.
This course meets the Biological and Physical Sciences General Education Requirement.

Explore and study the physics of mechanics, heat, and fluids. Meets the requirements of career programs and transfer programs in liberal arts, secondary education and health-related fields that require algebra-based general physics. Lab fee $40.

Prerequisite(s): MAT 141  (formerly MAT 131) and eligibility for ENG 111  or ENG 115   or ENG 121 .

Note: Credit is not given for both PHY 111 and PHY 211 .

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Develop a familiarity with, and an appreciation of ideas, laws and principles of Physics.
  • Analyze and solve problems using the concepts, equations and methods of mechanics and thermodynamics in both independent and collaborative settings.
  • Investigate physical phenomena experimentally using appropriate equipment and methods, and make valid comparisons with theoretical predictions.
  • Clearly communicate results of scientific inquiries.
