BPA 227 - Entrepreneurial Opportunity in Expanding Markets: Cannabis Legalization

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Examine the entrepreneurial opportunities that are created as markets change and expand; specifically, the issues involving cannabis, currently legal for medical and/or recreational use in a number of states and the District of Columbia. Explore business through the lens of the emerging cannabis industry as well as the businesses that arise as a result of it. Examine the economic and tax impact, the legal and regulatory environment and financing challenges for medical and recreational based businesses using the newly emerging market as a starting point for inquiry.

Prerequisite(s): BPA 111  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Appraise the history of cannabis in America

  • Outline the products made from  hemp
  • Describe the legal environment and how it has changed over time
  • Distinguish between ethical and legal issues regarding cannabis

Examine the economic impact of the legalization of cannabis

  • Describe the entrepreneurial and job opportunities that are created by the legalization of cannabis
  • Outline the various tax revenues by individual states

Interpret the Maryland regulations regarding medical cannabis

  • Recognize the requirements to be a licensed grower in Maryland
  • Recognize the requirements to be a licensed processor in Maryland
  • Recognize the requirements to be a licensed dispensary in Maryland

Examine the medical use of cannabis

  • Identify the individual compunds in the cannabis plant
  • Determine which diseases and symptoms can be treated by the cannabis plant’s compunds

Identify Direct, Indirect and Tertiary businesses that are created in the cannabis supply chain

  • Develop a business plan to take advantage of economic opportunities in the cannabis space
  • Create the proper legal form of organization
  • Determine the financial challenges in the cannabis space and how to overcome them
  • Determine the proper marketing strategies for businesses in the cannabis space
