MAS 118 - Business Fundamentals for Massage Therapists

2 credit hours - 30 hours of lecture; one term.
Formerly Business for Bodyworkers

Examine the business aspects of being a massage therapist, considering the perspective of employees, independent contractors and small business owners. Define business objectives and financial goals and address key areas such as interviewing, business structure, contracts, tax filing requirements, and marketing.

Prerequisite(s): MAS 110  or permission of Academic Chair.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Define themselves and their massage therapy practice goals, as they create a business plan.

2. Describe the differences between working as an employee, independent contractor and business owner, and how each affects tax-filing, contracts and insurance requirements.

3. Identify business objectives, including financial goals and business structure, for a successful massage therapy practice.

4. Conduct a competitive analysis to differentiate themselves from the competition and understand marketing strategies to reach new, and retain current, clients.

5. Present themselves professionally in a business plan, interview, and marketing and networking environments.
