MUS 101 - Music Fundamentals

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. 

Analyze and discuss rhythm, harmony and melody. Evaluate basic elements of musical notation. Apply fundamentals of analysis and transcription. This course is the foundation for further study of music theory and composition.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop proficiency in notation and identification of all major and minor scales and key signatures.
  2. Develop proficiency in notation and identification (written and aural) of intervals.
  3. Develop proficiency in notation and identification of chords (written and aural) triads and seventh chords.
  4. Develop proficiency in notation and identification of diatonic harmony.
  5. Develop proficiency in notation, identification, and performance of basic rhythm patterns.
  6. Compose simple melodies.
