ASL 120 - Introduction to the American Deaf Community

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Learn about deaf culture, history, heritage, American Sign Language and the deaf community in the United States and abroad.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Make comparisons between Deaf communities in the United States and those in other countries.
  2. Summarize the development and basic characteristics of ASL including phonology, morphology, and syntax.
  3. Explain historical attitudes toward Deaf people that continue to impact Deaf communities today. 
  4. Identify advances in accessibility.
  5. Formulate comparisons between students’ cultural experiences and the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of Deaf communities.
