ASL 140 - Introduction to Interpreting3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Learn basic principles, practices and history of interpreting for the Deaf. Discuss the logistics and theories of interpreting environments and settings, regulatory and legislative issues, resources, the RID Code of Professional Conduct tenets and certification exams.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize interpreting need and communication facilitation in the Deaf community.
- Discuss the complexity of interpreting between English and ASL including theories, models, application, code of conduct, and specialized settings.
- Explain the history of interpreting in the United States and Canada.
- Describe issues in the Deaf communities and ASL including oppression, stereotypes, and cultural views.
- Formulate comparisons between students’ cultural experiences and the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of Deaf communities.
