COM 112 - Newspaper Editing and Production3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Learn the basic techniques of copy editing and headline writing.
Prerequisite(s): COM 102 .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply fundamental editing skills for print and digital news stories with an emphasis on grammar, spelling, word use, AP style rules, accuracy and fact checking, and editing for content and space.
- Write headlines and photo captions for print and digital platforms, with consideration of Search Engine Optimization.
- Write and produce stories and images for publication under deadline pressure.
- Produce newspaper pages using the desktop publishing software InDesign and the photo editing
- Demonstrate, through discussions and practice, a solid understanding of ethical and legal issues in the fields of journalism and photojournalism, especially in the selection of content and images for publication.
- Demonstrate news judgment that affects story and image display.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how language affects audience perception of sensitive topics, such as race, age, sexual orientation or immigration status, mental health disorders or physical or intellectual disabilities.
