COM 202 - Writing for the News Media 23 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Build on reporting and writing techniques learned in COM 102, with emphasis on developing sources, covering news beats, understanding media law and ethics, and reporting for print and electronic media. Study a range of news gathering techniques, learn to develop story ideas and use public records and practice journalistic writing.
Prerequisite(s): COM 102 or permission of the department chair.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and uncover story ideas that go beyond event coverage.
- Report and write multiple-source, enterprise stories with speed and accuracy under deadline.
- Exercise well-developed news judgment.
- Probe sources for information that is not readily available.
- Gather information from the Internet and online databases.
- Apply journalistic writing skills to print, online and broadcast media.
- Evaluate and analyze journalism case studies through a lens of journalism ethics and professionalism.
