EDU 111 - Foundations of Education

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Explore the major developments in the history of American education. Includes a comprehensive overview of the historical, philosophical, sociological, political and legal foundations of education. Learn about the structure and organization of schools, influences on teaching and learning, roles of classroom teachers and contemporary policy and issues. Lab fee $85.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Note: Course requirements include 15 hours of fieldwork, which requires an additional cost and a background check.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Describe the impact of historical educational events impacting current trends.

2. Identify educational philosophies for personal reflection as well as studying the impacts on the modern-day classroom.

3. Discuss the cognitive, non-cognitive/affective, and physiological factors relating to children.

4. Discuss the role of the family, school, and community in relation to the development of children.

5. Identify the principles and components of law, educational vocabulary, personality, finance, sociocultural and behavioral theories.

6. Implement the major observation methods and assessment techniques used to study children.

7. Translate fieldwork classroom observations into effective teaching practices.
