HLS 213 - Transportation and Border Security3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Examine the view of modern border and transportation security. Explore security measures for seaports, ships, aircraft, trains, trucks, pipelines, and buses. Focus on the technology needed to detect terrorists and their weapons. Discuss the legal, economic, political, and cultural aspects of transportation and border security.
Prerequisite(s): HLS 111 or BPA 235 or permission of director.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze local, state of Maryland and federal maps, graphical diagrams and plans to ascertain jurisdictions.
- Problem solve using key concepts and principles in border control and transport security.
- Write clear, accurate, detailed and concise reports.
- Accurately identify critical land and water boundaries.
- Identify critical national and international laws and regulations regarding immigration, transportation, customs, etc.
- Demonstrate knowledge of operations and functions of federal and international border and transportation systems.
- Explain the meaning of and reasons for recent reforms in the law governing border and transportation security.
- Identify the strategic plan for national and international border and transportation security.
- Outline the strategic plans used by local and national governments and private sectors to provide railroad, port, cargo and aviation security.
- Outline the strategic plans used by local and federal government and private sectors to provide truck, road, vehicle, mass transportation, and pipeline security.
- Exhibit proficient writing and oral skills in expressing accurate information and providing assessments.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills through table-top exercises.
