MDA 116 - Fundamentals of Health Care Delivery Systems

3 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture; one term.
Learn the fundamental concepts and operations of health care delivery systems. Concepts include health care entity governance, health status indicators, health manpower, health care financing and utilization, health planning and regulation and health policy.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful compleition of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Explain how the broad determinants of health vs. health care services influence the health status of populations.

2.  Summarize the major historical developments that have shaped the nature of the U.S. health care delivery system.

3.  Describe and analyze the main outcomes of health care service delivery:  cost, access, and quality; and explain their inter-relationships.

4.  Describe and analyze key components of the structure of health care services.

5.  Analyze the various insurance mechanisms for financing health services and explain their impact on the consumption, organization, and delivery of health care in the U.S.

6.  Examine the role of epidemiological data to organize and manage health care services.

7.  Identify and describe the health care needs of special populations.

8.  Describe the principal features of health policy and explain how policy influences the structure of the U.S. health care system.

9.  Synthesize and apply contemporary research findings in health care management to explore key challenges of the U.S. health care system.

10.  Discuss the major political, technological, social, and economic trends affecting the U.S. health care system.

11.  Demonstrate ethical behavior consistent with professional codes of ethics.
