MUS 146 - Techniques of Sight Reading

1 credit hour - Two hours weekly; one term.
Students learn to recognize, by eye and ear, scale and chord passages in a melody and to recognize basic harmonic structure and simple modulation within a composition. They also learn to improvise harmonic accompaniments to simple melodies.

Prerequisite(s): MUS 141 .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Perform major and minor scales in all keys, ascending and descending intervals, major, minor, diminished, and augmented arpeggios, major 7, minor 7, dominant 7, half-diminished, and diminished arpeggios.
  2. Perform notated rhythms whole notes/rests through sixteenth notes/rests.
  3. Perform conjunct and disjunct diatonic and chromatic melodies.
  4. Perform diatonic and chromatic harmony.
  5. Perform in simple and compound meters.
