MUS 164 - Highlights of Music History: The Symphony

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
A study of the symphony and concerto from their origins in early baroque music through the era of the romantic virtuoso. Course includes listening to music and attending concerts.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the symphony through the study of its literature and musical developments from the 18th century to the present.
  2. Examine the instrument families that are part of a symphony.
  3. Examine the standard formal designs and selected musical constructs that are regularly employed in a symphony.
  4. Develop an understanding of the evolution of the symphony and the composers that influenced its change/development.
