MUS 165 - Highlights of Music History: Jazz

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. 

Analyze the development of jazz from the early 1900s to the present. Recognize various styles and artists important to the evolution of the art form, as well as elements needed for listener appreciation.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the various styles and genres that constitute jazz.
  2. Analyze the various jazz genres in terms of their historical context, stylistic content and musical impact.
  3. Develop and understanding of the major innovators in jazz including Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Garry Burton, Pat Metheny, etc.,
  4. Examine the standard formal designs and selected musical constructs that are regularly employed in a jazz.
  5. Develop and understanding of the new mediums (ever changing) in jazz, as well as the technological advances and evolving sound landscape.
