HEB 114 - Elementary Biblical Hebrew 23 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Develop vocabulary and grammar skills for reading and writing Biblical Hebrew. Gain experience in translating texts written in Biblical Hebrew.
Note: This course is not designed to teach spoken modern Hebrew. It focuses solely on reading, writing, and translating biblical (ancient) Hebrew.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use novice-high level grammatical and syntactical elements of Biblical Hebrew.
- Read and write Biblical Hebrew at a novice-high level.
- Describe the political, economic, social, and geographical systems of the ancient Middle East.
- Interpret Biblical Hebrew passages with the aid of dictionaries and concordances.
- Discuss the history of translation of Biblical Hebrew texts in Judaism and Christianity.
- Discuss ancient Hebrew conceptions of the divine.
