SPA 141 - Elementary Spanish for Health Care 23 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts and Humanities General Education Requirement.
Build upon knowledge learned in SPA 140 or SPA 111 with emphasis on speaking, reading and writing in a healthcare environment.
Prerequisite(s): SPA 111 or SPA 140 or one year of high school Spanish or permission of department chair.
Crosslisted: Also offered as SPA 141H ; credit is not given for both SPA 141 or SPA 141H .
Note: Credit will not be given for both SPA 141 and SPA 112 or SPA 141 and SPA 112H . This course is not for students who are already proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the main idea and some pieces of information in novice-high level written and spoken conversations about familiar topics and in short informational or fictional texts with an emphasis on medical topics.
- Communicate in spontaneous spoken conversations on both familiar, everyday and medical topics, using a variety of practiced, memorized, and original phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Present information on familiar, medical, and cultural topics using simple sentences and a variety of practiced, memorized, and some original phrases through spoken and written language.
- Combine a variety of grammar structures and vocabulary to respond to a range of novice-high level writing and speaking prompts related to health care interactions.
- Formulate comparisons between students’ cultural experiences and the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures.
