SPA 140H - Elementary Spanish for Health Care 1 - Honors3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This is an honors course.
This course meets the Arts and Humanities General Education Requirement.
Build vocabulary and grammar skills for the purpose of reading, writing, listening and speaking in medical settings with Spanish-speaking patients. Learn pertinent information about Spanish-speaking cultures as it applies to a healthcare setting while participating in language tasks through listening, reading, writing, and conversation.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Honors courses.

Note: Credit is not given for both SPA 140H and SPA 111 and also SPA 111H . This course is not for students who are already proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the main idea and details in novice-mid level written and spoken conversations and in short informational texts about familiar, everyday, and medical topics.
- Communicate in spontaneous spoken conversations on familiar, everyday and medical topics, using a variety of practiced, memorized, or original phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Present information on familiar, medical, and cultural topics using simple sentences and a variety of practiced, memorized, and some original phrases through spoken and written language.
- Combine a variety of grammar structures and vocabulary to respond to a range of novice-mid level writing and speaking prompts related to health care interactions.
- Formulate comparisons between students’ cultural experiences and the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures.
