HUM 270 - Capstone Seminar in Applied Humanities

3 credit hours - Three hours seminar weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts and Humanities General Education Requirement.

Examine critical questions in the Humanities through interdisciplinary and critical lenses in seminar discussion, developing multifaceted answers. Develop and discuss the theory and practice of active and ethical research and development of a hypothesis in the Humanities. The course culminates in a capstone project and portfolio of work showcasing the development of thought throughout seminar courses.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of ENG 101 /ENG 101A  with a grade of C or higher, three seminar-tagged general education courses in any discipline with a grade of C or higher, and permission from the School of Liberal Arts.

Crosslisted: Also offered as HUM 270H; credit not given for both HUM 270 and HUM 270H.

Note: HUM-270 may be taken concurrently with the final seminar-tagged course with permission of the School of Liberal Arts. If ENG 101 /ENG 101A  is completed as a seminar-tagged course, it may count as one of the three prerequisite seminar-tagged courses.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Adapt interdisciplinary approaches and critical lenses to address common questions.
  2. Synthesize connections across disciplines, texts, contexts, and courses.
  3. Apply the recursive writing process to create a portfolio of work completed across general education seminar classes.
  4. Compose interdisciplinary solutions, orally and in writing, using primary and secondary source material.
  5. Critique answers to common questions and develop a line of inquiry for further research.
