BPA 173 - Managing and Valuing Workforce Diversity

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Explore and identify how organizations can build inclusive cultures by embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Examine key issues like power and authority, communication, legal issues, gender roles, stereotypes, and workplace stress through case studies, readings, and hands-on projects. Apply critical analysis and problem-solving skills to assess workplace practices and to develop practical strategies to drive meaningful changes and support underrepresented groups.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define key concepts and legislation related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility with a focus on understanding the legal frameworks that shape workplace practices and protect underrepresented groups.
  2. Evaluate effective diversity management strategies and leadership models, highlighting exemplary organizations and individuals who champion inclusive practices and drive cultural change.
  3. Analyze the role of social identity, cross-cultural communication, and cultural awareness in shaping workplace dynamics, collaboration, and employee engagement.
  4. Examine the historical, cultural, and organizational factors affecting gender in leadership, including barriers to advancement, success factors for integration, and the legal implications of gender inequity in corporate environments.
  5. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop tools and strategies that support inclusive workplaces, address the needs of marginalized groups, and mitigate risks associated with poor diversity practices.
