EDU 135 - Children’s Health, Nutrition and Safety

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Wellness Requirement.

Discover the relationship of health, nutrition and safety to learning. Learn about proper health, nutrition, physical fitness and safety from infancy through adolescence. Examine a holistic view of children through exploration of topics such as brain research, environmental concerns, malnutrition, illness, family involvement, emergency preparedness and child abuse and neglect.

Course Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Describe the relationship between health and learning.

2. Identify concerns regarding health and physical fitness in self, children, families, and diverse populations

3. Describe the impact of nutrition on human development and learning.

4. Examine and practice methods of prevention, detection, and management of illness, injury, and disease in children.

5. Demonstrate and model healthy behavior choices that promote self-care.
