LPN 193 - Adult and Child Health Concepts in Practical Nursing10 credit hours - 90 hours of lecture, 42 hours of directed lab and 138 hours of clinical per term; one term. Learn essential principles, concepts and skills necessary for the care of adults and children with acute alterations in body systems. Apply theoretical concepts and perform nursing skills specific to adult and child clients in acute care settings. Lab fee $300. Clinical fee $275.
Prerequisite(s): LPN 180 .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Care Provider: The nursing student develops the utilization of the 5 steps of the nursing process to facilitate and provide nursing care that is holistic, systematic, evidence-based, safe, and grounded in understanding of the sciences, humanities, cultural diversity and nursing theory to adult clients and pediatric clients.
LPN 193 Sub Outcomes for Care Provider:
- Develops evidence-based nursing care based on the application of the sciences, humanities, and nursing theory.
- Utilizes the use of the nursing process to provide safe and accurate nursing care to adult medical-surgical clients and their families in various settings as well as care common to complex pediatric clients and their families in various settings.
- Delivers care that is holistic, systematic, evidence based, culturally sensitive and safe for up to two (2) adult medical-surgical clients, their families and up to two (2) pediatric clients and their families
2. Investigator: The nursing student develops data analysis, question assumptions and approaches all adult medical surgical clients and pediatric clients with curiosity resulting in safe clinical decisions that improve the quality of care.
LPN 193 Sub Outcomes for Investigator:
- Recognizes and questions deviations from optimum health status and uses these to guide safe clinical decisions for the adult medical-surgical client and pediatric client.
- Recognizes variations along the developmental continuum in the individual adult medical-surgical client and pediatric client.
- Utilizes health care technologies to promote research, analysis, interpretation, and integration of data that aids in developing individualized nursing care plans for the adult medical-surgical client and pediatric client in a variety of settings.
3. Professional: The nursing student develops the implementation of the professional role in ways that reflect integrity, responsibility, ethical practices, and an evolving identity as a nurse.

- Demonstrates behaviors that reflect confidentiality, integrity, responsibility, and professional ethics.
- Demonstrates accountability in implementing the prescribed care regimen for the client with predictable health problems within the legal, ethical, and regulatory frameworks of nursing practice.

4. Collaborator: The nursing student develops collaboration with adult clients, pediatric clients, their families, and the health care team to provide coordinated care that is holistic, safe, and individualized.

- Collaborates with peers, faculty, and begins to collaborate with selected members of the interdisciplinary health care team to optimize the understanding of client care in a variety of settings.
- Recognizes the need to advocate for adult medical-surgical clients, and their families in various settings with appropriate members of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide safe, organized, and prioritized care.
- Begins to advocate for pediatric clients and their families in various settings with appropriate members of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide safe, organized, and prioritized care.
5. Educator: The nursing student develops the utilization of teaching and learning strategies to reinforce knowledge that optimizes decisions related to health and wellness for adult clients, pediatric clients, families, peers, and the community.

- Assesses the educational need, begins to plan, and implement educational strategies that reinforce positive health and wellness outcomes for adult medical-surgical clients, pediatric clients, and their families.
- Utilizes technology resources to implement and reinforce client education.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of client teaching and in collaboration with the healthcare team modifies as necessary to achieve positive health outcomes for adult medical-surgical clients, pediatric clients and their families.
6. Communicator: The nursing student develops the utilization of professional and therapeutic communication strategies with adult clients, pediatric clients, families, and the health care team to promote positive client outcomes.

- Begins to adapt therapeutic communication strategies for adult medical-surgical and pediatric clients of various developmental levels.
- Begins to adapt therapeutic professional communication strategies for adult medical-surgical and pediatric clients of various developmental levels.
