PLS 111 - American Government

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Requirement.

An introduction to American politics. Focuses upon such topics as ideology, public opinion, political behavior and voting dynamics, political parties, the presidency, Congress, Supreme Court, foreign policy and national defense.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the foundations and structures of American government, including the Constitution and the roles of the three branches.

  2. Identify and analyze major ideological and cultural divisions in American politics and how they shape political behavior, policy, and leadership.

  3. Describe how individuals, interest groups, political parties, and the media influence and participate in the political process.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to research and critically evaluate current political issues from multiple perspectives using credible online resources.

  5. Engage in respectful and informed discussion of political topics as preparation for active civic life.
