HLS 275H - Homeland Security Internship - Honors3 credit hours - One hour of seminar, eight hours of work weekly; one term. This is an Honors course.
Provides advanced students with practical professional experience in the field of Homeland Security and Criminal Justice. Students apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings through supervised placements, gaining insight into the practices, challenges, and responsibilities of criminal justice professionals. Internship opportunities allow students to develop career skills, enhance professional growth, and explore potential pathways within the criminal justice system.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for honors courses. Permission of institute director, 2.5 GPA and acceptance by assigned intern agency. The institute director may grant permission when a student has less than a 2.5 GPA. Otherwise, an internship placement cannot be obtained.
Crosslisted: Also offered as HLS 275 . Credit will not be given for HLS 275 and HLS 275H and also CJS 275 and CJS 275H .
Note: Enrollment in internship courses requires that students hold an appropriate internship placement in order to receive course credit. Please consult with the Coordinator for Internships prior to registering unless otherwise specified by the department chair or director. Many law enforcement agencies require students to successfully complete a background check. Those wishing to secure internships with law enforcement and homeland security agencies should contact the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice Institute’s internship coordinator 90 days prior to start of course. Otherwise internships at certain agencies may not be obtainable.

Course Outcomes: The objective of this course is to provide students with maximum on-site practical work experiences at an assigned Homeland Security and Criminal Justice agency. Students will discuss and examine their experiences in class meetings, maintain a detailed log of field experiences and prepare an evaluation of the activities in which they participate.
- Examine their internship experiences and activities.
- Evaluate the on-site practical work experiences in which they engage.
- Develop and practice valuable work experience and knowledge of the field.
- Cultivate training and development in the workplace under professional guidance and supervision.
- Apply course ideas, theories, and concepts to practice.
