MUS 223 - Applied Music: Small Ensemble1 credit hour - One lecture hour weekly; one term The study and performance of classical, jazz, and commercial/popular music for various small ensembles. Students may choose to perform in one or more of the following: String Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble, Small Jazz Combo, or Commercial/Popular Band. The course content, depending upon the instrumental and/or vocal makeup of the class, will include a diversity of styles that may range from traditional to modern repertoire. Lab fee $250.
Note: The course is repeatable four times for credit.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Accurately follow the conducting pattern of the music director, remaining coordinated with the ensemble and successfully responding to musical cues from both the director and ensemble members.
2) Develop accurate sight-reading abilities on the student’s principal instrument, enhancing fluency and interpretation of musical notation.
3) Demonstrate musicianship skills involving small ensemble music playing, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, tone, pitch, rhythm, time, and improvisation.
4) Perform works composed and/or arranged for classical, jazz, and commercial/popular music genres with accuracy, fluency, and appropriate style.
5) Perform a concert at the end of the semester.
