Patient Care Technician/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (certificate)

Purpose: This two-course sequence is designed for persons who wish to function as multi-skilled workers at area hospitals. The first course will prepare the students for basic bedside care in a hospital, subacute, or long-term care facility. Students who complete the first course are eligible for the Certified Nursing Assistant through the Maryland Board of Nursing or eligible to sit for the state registry exam for Geriatric Nursing Assistants. After completing the second course, students will be able to perform advanced skills, including phlebotomy, urinary catheterization, wound care and basic cardiac monitoring, under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Additional Certificate Requirements

Completion of all courses within the program with a grade of C or better in each course.

 

Anne Arundel Community College and/or the School of Health Sciences reserves the right to revise requirements for admission into the Health Sciences programs, the selection criteria and procedures, and the required courses for programs of study as deemed necessary without prior notification.

Financial Aid: This program has not been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for eligibility for federal student aid. Students enrolled in this program may not be eligible to receive financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education (Pell Grants, SEOG, Federal Work-Study, Direct Loans or PLUS loans) or the Maryland Higher Educations Commission (Educational Assistance Grants, Senatorial Scholarships or Delegate Scholarships). Admission Requirements


  1. Attendance at a program information session or call 410-777-7310 for schedule. Detailed information regarding profession, admission and academic requirements will be discussed.
  2. Submit a completed program application.
  3. Students will be admitted to the PCT/GNA course sequence as the number of students permits. Completed applications will be assured consideration based on space availability. Seats are given to those students meeting academic and admission requirements.
  4. Students must demonstrate reading and mathematics proficiency by taking the college English and mathematics placement tests and show:

Selection Criteria

Students will be admitted to the PCT/GNA course sequence on a rolling admission basis. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Students will apply for the PCT/GNA program only after meeting all academic and admission criteria. Once the applicant’s admission criteria have been verified, that student receives conditional acceptance for the next available seat. Applications will be rejected if incomplete. Incomplete applications will be sent back to the student and can be resubmitted once they are complete. Students need only apply once to the program, providing their application is complete. A future seat will be slotted for them once the student meets the criteria for admission.

To be considered for conditional acceptance, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • First consideration will be given to candidates whose resident address is in Anne Arundel County for at least three months prior to the date the application is submitted. If not selected for the initial class, the Address Verification form must be resubmitted to the Records office.
  • Must satisfactorily complete all academic and admission requirements.
  • Meet English and Reading eligibility requirements.
  • Take mathematics placement test.
  • Address verification.
  • Final acceptance in the program shall be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, satisfactory completion of a health examination record, and submission of a copy of the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification card.
  • Qualified applicants under the age of 18 are eligible to complete the PCT/GNA course sequence at AACC and apply for state licensure. However, the Maryland State Board of Nursing mandates individuals must be 18 years of age or older to seek employment.

Advanced Patient Care Technician Additional Selection Criteria

  • Current AACC PCT/GNA students will be given first priority for the sequential Advanced PCT class.
  • Current PCT/GNA students will complete a form during the PCT/GNA course indicating that he/she will enroll in the Advanced PCT course the following semester, contingent on passing the PCT/GNA course with a grade of C or better.
  • All students entering the Advanced Patient Care Technician Program must have an active CNA certification to be eligible to register for NUR103.
  • Current PCT/GNA students who elect to not enroll in the Advanced PCT course the following semester must submit a program application if they should decide to do so at a later date.
  • Advanced PCT applicants must have completed AACC’s PCT/GNA class with a grade of C or better within the last two years to be eligible for selection.
  • Advanced PCT applicants must meet the ENG 111  eligibility requirement.
  • Advanced PCT applicants who have not taken the PCT/GNA class at AACC must submit the following at the time of application:
    • Letter from current employer on letterhead stating they are currently working in the profession
    • Copy of active CNA certification
  • Advanced PCT applicants currently enrolled in the Center for Applied Technology North or South Nursing Assistant program must submit a letter, on school letterhead, from his/her instructor verifying successful completion of clinical experience in lieu of employment.

Technical Standards

Students who are conditionally accepted to this program of study will be required to submit a Health Examination Record completed by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant validating that the student meets the technical standard of good physical and mental health as established by the School of Health Sciences, and verifying that the student is free of communicable diseases as evidenced by required immunizations/titers.

CPR

Students must successfully complete the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR course by designated deadline.

Criminal Background Checks and Drug Screening

Certificate Graduation Requirements


To graduate with a certificate, students must have demonstrated eligibility for ENG 111  or ENG 115 .  See Academic Regulations for all Graduation Requirements.  

Program Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Accurately receive report and document essential information on patients’ conditions and status of care in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate communication using therapeutic communication techniques with patients, peers, family members, staff and nursing faculty.
  • Describe the care of patients throughout the life span, to include an understanding of cultural diversity, beliefs, and environmental influences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of principles and related rationales of interventions when administering patient care.

  • Completely and safely perform basic and advanced skills required by the Board of Nursing for an advanced certified nursing assistant of patients in acute care facilities.
  • Describe the roles, responsibilities and legal/ethical issues related to the scope of practice of the advanced patient care technician related to the policy and procedures of the acute care agency and Anne Arundel Community College
  • Efficiently utilize the learning management system, and electronic medical record to ensure completion of course objectives, and safely care for patients.
