ENG 284-American Nightmares: Popular Horror Fiction3 credit hours – Three hours lecture weekly; one term.
Examine a selection of best-selling, influential American horror fiction from Psycho to The Walking Dead; consider various theories on the appeal, effects, and functions of horror; analyze the texts’ formal elements as well as their historical, political, and cultural contexts. Study novels and short stories by Bloch, Levin, Blatty, Rice, King, Harris, and others.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 111 and ENG 112 or ENG 115 and ENG 116 or ENG 121 or permission of the department chair.
