ART 209 - History of Western Art 1

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.

An introduction to the development of architecture, painting and sculpture in the Western World from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Class discussions are supplemented by trips to museums in the Baltimore- Washington area. No previous art courses are necessary.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the major cultures of the Ancient World and Medieval Europe

2. Describe the artistic and historical achievements of each culture

3. Situate artistic styles within socio-historical contexts

4. Identify iconography (subject matter and meaning) peculiar to a specific era or geographic region and explain its significance to that culture

5. Describe the techniques used in creating different categories of art objects
