ART 220 - History of Modern Art

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.  This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

An introduction to the history of Western art since 1800. Although the emphasis is on architecture, painting and sculpture, some time is devoted to the development of photography and industrial and urban design. Discussions of slides are supplemented by trips to museums in the Baltimore-Washington area. No previous art courses are necessary.

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Recognize and analyze the elements of works of art in all the major Western visual media and articulate aesthetic responses to such works.

2. Recognize the major periods, styles, theories, artists, and works in the last two centuries of Western art history.

3. Interpret works of art as expressions of an individual’s and a culture’s definitions, values, and ideas and to be able to articulate those ideas.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of the materials, methods, vocabulary and concepts of art and art history.
