ART 247 - Lithographic Printmaking

3 credit hours - Two hours of lecture and two hours of studio weekly; one term.
Learn the fundamentals of lithography. Explore the basic techniques (plate preparation, etches and counter etches), materials (crayon, tusche and new media), and print methods (working the press, ink, and paper) to create fine art lithographs. Lab fee $50.

Prerequisite(s): ART 125  or permission of department chair.

Course Outcomes:
 

  • Create a portfolio of art images using lithographic processes.
    • Demonstrate a consistent viewpoint in an edition of prints.
    • Compose artwork using coherent principles of form and design.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the materials, principles, vocabulary and concepts of lithography.
    • Explain how a particular lithograph works technically.
    • Describe how a particular lithograph works visually.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of historical lithography on contemporary lithographic practices.
    • Explain how Aloys Senefelder’s material discoveries of lithographic principles influence present-day lithography.
    • Explain the relationship between commercial and fine art lithographic practices.
    • Evaluate the continued debate over the use of limestone versus metal as a print matrix.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of technical lithographic processes.
    • Create a consistent portfolio of prints using regulated etches.
    • Create a consistent portfolio of prints using shellac printing base.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the esthetics of lithographic processes.
    • Explain how the use of printed marks differs from painted or drawn marks.
    • Explain the graphic qualities of planographic artworks.
