ASL 121 - Deaf Culture3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Discuss historical and contemporary perspectives of the American deaf culture using a socio-cultural model. Analyze evolving cultural definitions and discuss the intersection of American and deaf cultures.
Note: Typically offered OL; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Examine general themes and issues in the realms of Deaf history, Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL).
- Summarize important themes in the realm of the Deaf community and its cultural norms and values.
- Recognize historical events that continue to impact the Deaf communities today.
- Analyze technological impacts on Deaf culture.
- Review the continuous impact of oralism.
- Contrast Deaf culture in America and other global cultures.
- Explore history of Deaf people and their cultural norms and values.
- Review notable Deaf people and schools for the Deaf and their hand in the formation of Deaf culture.
- Explain the rise and demise of Deaf social clubs.
- Reviews the Deaf-World: churches, newspapers, companies, etc.
- Explore issues in the Deaf communities and ASL.
- Define Deaf culture.
- Discuss the collective Deaf experience with their family and interactions with the world.
- Examine and interpret meanings within Deaf jokes and stories.
- Define audism and linguicism and recognize such scenarios.
- Differentiate between Deaf and deaf.
- Analyze diversity within the Deaf community.
- Explore diversity within the Deaf community and how diversity is accepted and rejected.
- Identify additional disabilities within the Deaf community.
- Discuss why Deaf people consider themselves as a “linguistic minority” rather than disabled.
- Write one or more expository papers related to Deaf culture.
- Utilize library and internet-based resources.
- Demonstrate ability to express oneself in written form.
- Participate in a Deaf event in the MD/DC/VA area to observe Deaf culture (values, norms, etc.)
