BPA 171 - Principles of Supervision

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Explore the role and responsibilities of a successful supervisor in today’s diverse workplace. Topics include planning, motivation, decision-making, conflict resolution, communicating effectively, discipline and counseling, and selecting, training and appraising employees.

Note: Typically offered OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the basic skills needed of a supervisor.

2. Examine the challenges facing the modern supervisor.       

3. Explain the importance of planning, delegating and decision making.

4. Explain theories of motivation, methods of conflict resolution and discipline techniques.

5. Describe the supervisor’s role in the employee selection and development process.
