BPA 238 - Domestic and International Freight Operations

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Examines current issues and best practices in the area of domestic and international freight operations. Course topics include transportation providers, regulation and policy, carrier strategies, costing and pricing, information systems, transportation management, and the negotiation and bidding process.

Prerequisite(s): BPA 235  or permission of department chair.

Note: Typically offered at GB; spring term.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

a. Recognize the historical connection between domestic and international freight and the supply chain and the economy.

b. Differentiate between the major modes of transportation.

c. Recognize and describe current issues in domestic and international freight operations.

d. Identify and comprehend the interrelated nature of freight operations with respect to the entire transportation industry.

e. Explain the political, economic, and social trends that impact domestic and international freight operations.

f. Recognize the importance of regulation and policy procedures, laws and/or measures that affect domestic and international freight operations.

g. Identify and explain the functions of transportation management costing strategies, information management, technology, and the shipper process and strategies.

h. Identify the unique domestic and international freight operations environment in the local area/region.

i. Identify strategies for managing the freight operation process.
