CTA 001 - Elementary PC Skills1 equivalent hour - 25 hours; one term. Formerly CSI 001 - Elementary PC Skills
Examine and practice elementary hardware and software system operations. Demonstrate using proper techniques for starting and shutting down the computer, adjusting the monitor, handling compact disk and other storage devices, keyboarding, mouse manipulation, formatting and working with CD-ROMs and DVDs, copying files, opening, saving and storing files on internal and external devices, working with the Windows Operating System, starting applications and using the printer. Students are also exposed to computer technology. Course fee $13.
Note: Introduces students with little or no prior computer experience to the elements of using a PC.

- Demonstrate proper power up and power down procedures
- Demonstrate warm and cold start up procedures and log off and power off procedures
- Make adjustments to display monitor
- Make adjustments for brightness, color and screen adjustments
- Demonstrate familiarity with keyboard
- Understand the use of standard keys, special keys and function keys
- Perform mouse movement and button clicking operations
- Understand the use of a mouse as a pointing device
- Understand single click, double click, right click and drag
- Set up printer to accept output
- Understand on line and offline printing
- Change from single part to multi part paper and custom designed output sheets
- Demonstrate proper handling of diskette storage media
- Understand the proper handling of removable storage media
- Understand the proper way to connect media to a port
- Describe the difference between hardware and software
- Understand the two types of software (system and applications)
- Understand the components of the information processing cycle (input, process, storage, output)
- Start up operating environment
- Understanding difference between cold start and warm start
- Understanding proper shut down methods ( log off, sleep mode, power off)
- Escape from system crash
- Recover from a system crash
- Save files, create backups and restore backups
- Understand the use of folders to save files
- Understand the use of utilities to copy files
