COM 101 - Introduction to Mass Media

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. 

Learn about the history and theory of mass media in America. Discuss the development, practices and problems of mass media. Learn to understand and critically evaluate media messages.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A  or permission of the department.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; all terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Describe the fundamental principles, concepts, and practices of various print and electronic media
  2. Analyze news through objective inquiry and assessment of data
  3. Analyze film, television, radio, print, and digital media for content and consequence
  4. Apply ethical principles to the production and consumption of journalism
  5. Explain the impact and scope of advancements in the communications field
  6. Interpret messages as they are delivered by various media
  7. Analyze news topics from a variety of perspectives, such as local, national, and global
