DAN 105 - Beginning Tap Dance 1

2 credit hours - One hour of lecture and two hours of studio weekly; one term.
A beginning study of the technical fundamentals of tap dance. This course will include learning basic single and double sounds and various combinations at the barre and centre. Positions of the body, use of port de bras, movement through space and learning short combinations will also be explored. May be repeated once for a total of four credit hours.

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  • Practice basic tap rhythms and sounds.
    • Describe and demonstrate the mechanics of the footwork.
    • Break down the rhythm so the feet can accurately duplicate the tap movements
    • Isolate the toe from the heel in practicing the basic rhythms.
  • Develop proficiency in exercises designed to strengthen technique and performance.
    • Commit to a practice schedule outside of the classroom to develop proficiency in tapping.
    • Repeat the exercises learned in the studio at home to commit the proper tap movement to muscle memory.
  • Combine several tap steps/sounds together to develop and perform short combinations.
    • Combine two or three tap movements to create a new sound or rhythm pattern.
    • Develop a series of steps to practice and demonstrate.
    • Combine several of the small series of steps together to create and execute a longer movement phrase.
  • Achieve the proper body alignment/position to execute the tap rhythms/steps taught in class.
    • Practice proper body alignment by utilizing a mirror to check the placement.
    • View videos or DVD’s of professional tap dancers and compare and contrast the body alignment and stylistic similarities and differences.
