EDU 211 - Educational Psychology

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Discover the basic theories of learning and teaching and the application of theory to educational environments. Examine the adaptation of the concepts of behavioral, cognitive and constructivist learning theories to teaching and managing an effective learning environment. Learn about the principles of motivation, classroom management and assessment of student performance. Lab fee $85.

Prerequisite(s): EDU 242  or EDU 242H  OR a bachelor’s degree or permission from department chair.

Corequisite(s): EDU 242  or EDU 242H .

Note: Course requirements include 15 hours of fieldwork, which requires an additional cost and a background check. 

Students must have a 3.0 GPA or passage of basic skills testing in order to graduate with the AAT degree.

Course Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Define the concept of educational psychology as related to teaching and learning.
2. Identify the stages of cognitive, linguistic, emotional, social, and moral development.
3. Explain the influence of student differences, including intellect, gender, socioeconomic, disabilities, and diversity, upon teaching and learning.
4. Identify the principles and components of behavioral, cognitive, and constructivist learning theories.
5. Compare and contrast the various approaches of motivating student learning and involvement.
6. Identify effective classroom management techniques founded upon research and best practice.
7. Identify types of formal and informal assessment.
8. Describe appropriate and effective uses of statistics and data collection in the classroom.
9.  Apply the principles of test item construction to developing appropriate assessment tools.
10. Discuss current research findings relative to educational psychology.
11. Extrapolate observations as related to seminar discussions on guided topics. 
12. Translate observations into effective teaching and management practices. 
13. Discuss the major roles and responsibilities of education in relation to parent and family involvement.
