EDU 219 - Assessing the Adult Learner1 credit hour - Three hours weekly; five weeks. Analyze the current thinking on the practice of assessing adult learners in a comprehensive and practical fashion. Examine the principles of assessment including planning for assessment, creating an assessment toolkit, and understanding and using assessment results. Investigate the uses of common assessment tools, including teacher-made tests, commercial materials, authentic assessment, alternative assessments and performance based assessments.
Note: Typically offered OL; summer term.
Course Outcomes:
- Identify the principles of effective instructional assessment for adult learners
- Connect curriculum mapping to planning meaningful assessment that informs instruction
- Create an instructional assessment toolkit including rubrics, teacher made tests, authentic assessments and portfolios
- Practice summarizing and using assessment results to inform instruction
- Discuss contemporary trends and issues relative to the assessment of instruction in adult learning (including diversity, learning styles, at risk learners)
