EDU 255 - Instructional Teamwork

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Examine the theories and models of collaboration appropriate for developing partnerships that meet the needs of diverse student populations. Identify collaboration of special services, models of consultation, teaming in the school setting, and conflict management styles. Develop effective interpersonal problem-solving and communication skills for the professional.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Note: Typically offered OL; spring term.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Identify effective collaboration and consultative practices used for the delivery of special services within school systems.
  2. Identify common support services and available resources that provide assistance in the delivery of special services within school systems.
  3. Explain the use and value of community, state, and federal resources in the delivery of special services within school systems.
  4. Identify factors that promote effective communication and collaborations with individuals, parents, families, professionals, and community members in a culturally responsive special education programs.
  5. Identify appropriate strategies that assist parents and families in dealing with typical concerns related to their children with special needs.
  6. Develop individual education programs working in collaboration with others.
  7. Identify strategies that foster respectful and beneficial relationships between families and professional.
  8. Identify strategies that foster collaboration with regular classroom teachers and other school and community personnel for integrating individuals with special needs in various learning environments.
  9. Distinguish between reactive and proactive approaches to problem solving.
  10. Develop skills and identify strategies for facilitating interpersonal problem solving.
  11. Describe principles of effective verbal and nonverbal communication.
  12. Identify principles of conflict management and strategies for addressing conflict.
  13. Discuss ethical issues that may arise in professional collaboration.
