EMT 114 - EMT-Intermediate Skills Mastery and Field Internship

5 credit hours - 60 hours of college laboratory, 135 hours of hospital clinical and field experience; one term.
Gain advanced life support skills, experience and competence in college lab. Through supervised hospital clinical and field experience, prepare the EMT-Intermediate student to transition to field practice and develop in the role of pre-hospital provider.  Successful completion leads to eligibility to take the Maryland State EMT Intermediate certification exam. Students are expected to practice selected procedures on each other during college lab. Lab fee $75. Clinical fee $25.

Prerequisite(s): EMT 112 , EMT 113  and permission of the EMT department chair.

Course Outcomes:

  • Unit I.—College Laboratory-Demonstrate entry-level proficiency as an advanced life support provider
    • Review didactic material for written examination
    • Demonstrate Skills during a mock practical of the National Registry EMT-I examination
  • Unit II.—Hospital Clinical Laboratory-Demonstrate proficiency of skills in the hospital clinical setting.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the techniques of medication administration, intravenous insertion, and patient assessment.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the techniques of administration of nebulized medications and respiratory assessment
    • Demonstrate proficiency in ECG interpretation
    • Integrate assessment findings of the obstetrical and neonatal patients
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment of the severely injured patient
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment of the pediatric patient
  • Unit III.—Pre-Hospital Field Clinical-Demonstrate entry-level proficiency as and advanced life support provider
    • Demonstrate proficiency integration of pathophysiology, assessment, and management of the acutely ill or injured patient.
