ENG 160 - The Art and Science of Grammar3 credit hours - Three hours of lecture weekly; one term. Learn the grammar of the English language at an advanced level. Focus on the definitions, functions and relationships among its words. Analyze the types, styles and logic of grammatically correct sentences and use this knowledge and these skills to assess effective written communication. Assess punctuation’s impact on communication.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .
Note: Typically offered at MC; spring term.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Use Standard English to develop writing and reading skills.
- Identify and compare types of grammar.
- Recognize, identify, and correctly use different types of phrases, clauses, and modifiers.
- Recognize, identify, define, compare/contrast and write different types of sentences.
- Choose words carefully and consciously to create clear and effective sentences.
- Choose and arrange stylistic elements for artistic purposes.
- Use appropriate and standard use of punctuation and graphics.
- Analyze the rhetorical effect of grammatical choices.
