ENG 200 - Introduction to Creative Writing3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Learn the basic craft elements of writing poetry and short fiction. Complete weekly exercises designed to teach the fundamental aspects of reading and writing poetry and fiction. Develop collections of poems and short stories. Practice the workshop method to discuss student writing, foster critical thinking and develop individual styles.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 /ENG 101A or permission of the department.
Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Write imaginative literature including fiction and poetry;
- Correctly use a range of literary techniques and to discuss one’s own writing and the writing of one’s peers;
- Employ a range of literary techniques such as character development, point of view, narrative, pace, dialogue, figurative language, metrical line, sound devices, etc.;
- Practice disciplined writing habits such as journaling, keeping a daily writing schedule, drafting, editing, and revising;
- Respond appropriately to feedback, including self-feedback and evaluation;
- Implement feedback into the revision process and articulate how the feedback raises the writing to a higher standard;
- Apply a constructively critical approach to literature when considering work generated through the course;
- Evaluate working writers at reading and staging events within the community at large.
