GSS 221 - Psychology of Men

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Examines the factors that influence male behavior and masculine development. Topics include lifespan development, fathering, men’s health, violence, education and relationships with emphasis on current psychological theories and research.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 111  or permission of department chair.

Crosslisted: Also offered as PSY 221 ; credit is not given for both GSS 221 and PSY 221 .

Course Outcomes:
  • Acquire knowledge of mens gender role identities and
    gender schemas
    • Illustrate and define gender role terminology that assesses the male
      experience
    • Assess theoretical perspectives regarding male gender role socialization
  • Understand the advantages that gender expectations produce for
    both men and women
    • Appraise the various historical trends that have arisen
    • Predict future directions in the field of psychology of men
    • Assess current contributions in the field
  • Describe the impact of peripheral issues such as physical
    health issues, potential mental health complexities and
    workplace dynamics
    • Identify specific health-related issues to men
    • Develop an understanding of the male experience in the workplace
    • Describe mental health concerns related to the stressors intrinsic to the
      male experience
  • Explain the origins and specific issues related to men
    and violence
    • Describe the dynamics involved in the issue of domestic violence
    • Develop an understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault and
      victimization
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of ethnic identity
    in relation to the male experience
    • Analyze the cultural influences related to the experience
    • Evaluate the impact of ethnicity and social class in the lives of men
  • Demonstrate an understanding of relationship dynamics
    and sexuality in relation to the male experience
    • Describe the social development of men
    • Analyze the issues related to sexuality, sexual issues and sexual
      problems
    • Evaluate cross-cultural variations in male sexuality and relationships
