GEO 240 - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

3 credit hours - two hours lecture, one hour of directed lab
This course meets the Technology Requirement.

Utilize geospatial technology and apply foundational concepts in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect, store, analyze, and display natural and social science data. Demonstrate knowledge and application of fundamental cartographic principals and analytical methods using industry standard hardware and software. 

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Describe the fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems and Geospatial Technology
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in the basic functions of geospatial software and hardware
  3. Demonstrate basic proficiency in cartographic design principles
  4. Explain and describe spatial analysis techniques
  5. Discuss fundamental concepts and use of remotely sensed data
  6. Identify and demonstrate uses of Geographic Information Systems and Geospatial Technology to solve problems and convey information
