HEA 116 - The Health Consumer in Today’s World3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term This course meets the Wellness Requirement.
Examine various health-related issues facing consumers including the health care system, health insurance and evidence-based assessments of health products, services and food. Apply decision-making skills to evaluate health information and resources that positively influence one’s wellness.
Note: Typically offered OL; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Identify fraud or quackery in the health market.
- Examine how medical facts are determined and where to get appropriate health information and advice.
- Identify advertising strategies that influence the diverse populations of consumers.
- Develop informed decisions about health care and health insurance.
- Explain how to choose appropriate health care products and services to meet the diverse needs of the consumer.
- Identify an individual’s role in their health care in order to effectively implement prevention strategies and select treatment services.
- Examine evidence-based methods of prevention, detection and management of illness, injury and disease for optimal health and wellness.
- Identify consumer’s rights and discuss how to protect those rights.
- Develop a plan for the prevention and treatment of diseases based on family history.
