HEA 116 - The Health Consumer in Today’s World

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term
This course meets the Wellness Requirement.

Examine various health-related issues facing consumers including the health care system, health insurance and evidence-based assessments of health products, services and food. Apply decision-making skills to evaluate health information and resources that positively influence one’s wellness.

Note: Typically offered OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Identify fraud or quackery in the health market.
  2. Examine how medical facts are determined and where to get appropriate health information and advice.
  3. Identify advertising strategies that influence the diverse populations of consumers.
  4. Develop informed decisions about health care and health insurance.
  5. Explain how to choose appropriate health care products and services to meet the diverse needs of the consumer.
  6. Identify an individual’s role in their health care in order to effectively implement prevention strategies and select treatment services.   
  7. Examine evidence-based methods of prevention, detection and management of illness, injury and disease for optimal health and wellness. 
  8. Identify consumer’s rights and discuss how to protect those rights.
  9. Develop a plan for the prevention and treatment of diseases based on family history.
