MDC 105 - Introduction to CPT/HCPCS Coding

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Formerly HIT 218 - Introduction to CPT/HCPCS Coding

Apply the basic coding guidelines of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) nomenclature. Apply CPT/HCPCS codes validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record. Apply and promote ethical coding standards while adhering to current regulations and established guidelines such as the National Correct Coding Initiative.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Medical Coding Certificate Program  or permission of the program coordinator.

Corequisite(s): MDC 101  and MDC 103  (formerly HIT 217).  

Note: Typically offered OL; fall term.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Recognize the symbols used in the CPT manual and identify the content of the CPT appendices.
  2.  Locate the terms in the CPT and HCPCS indexes.
  3.  Demonstrate the ability to code E/M code.
  4.  Demonstrate the ability to assign CPT and HCPCS codes.
  5.  Differentiate between a new and an established patient and an inpatient and outpatient.
