HIT 276 - Health Information Technology Practicum

3 credit hours - 160 hours practicum; one term.
Participate in a supervised practicum using simulation software and in a clinical practice setting. Perform functions related to the analysis and reporting requirements for health records, release of information, coding of medical records, and data abstracting. Take a mock Registered Health Information Technician accreditation examination.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of all Health Information Technology degree required courses prior to practicum with a grade of C or better.

Course Outcomes:

  • Implement strategies to ensure compliance and accuracy with diagnostic/procedural groupings (CPT/ICD/HCPC).
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness in electronic coding and batching.
  • Apply state policies and procedures regarding the use of clinical data to support financial processes.
  • Develop and maintain technology systems to ensure that billing and coding, chargemaster functions, claims management and bill reconciliation processes are timely and accurate.
  • Query health information data from procedural and diagnostic coding.
  • Perform abstraction procedures for health information and data.
  • Collect, maintain, organize and present data for operation support functions.
  • Analyze and critique health data.
  • Perform query activities to abstract and report data for facility wide quality management and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze data to identify trends that reflect and demonstrate quality, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare.
  • Apply knowledge of national information systems policies and procedures related to health information initiatives from the national, state, local and facility levels.
  • Explain policies and procedures related to various payment systems for healthcare services, such as: Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and indemnity.
  • Differentiate the roles of various providers and discplines through the continuum of healthcare and response to their needs.
  • Apply principles of healthcare privacy, confidentiality, legal and ethical standards in the implementation of legal and regulatory requirements related to the health information infrastructure.
  • Apply standards set forth in releasing personal health information.
  • Conduct educational training programs regarding the maintenance and release of personal health information.
  • Describe the types of healthcare information and communication techologies used to support a health system.
  • Use technology to ensure proper data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting of information.
  • Use software applications, such as: spread sheets, databases, word processing, graphics, presentation, e-mail, and other common software applications.
